It’s a little tricky to take a photo of a tattoo on your own back, which is why this isn’t the best photo. But that quote from Anthony Bourdain about the world leaving its mark on you struck me and I wanted to share this. The tattoo in this photo was my first tattoo. I was 20 years old.

I think I may have posted about world map tattoos before, but it’s an idea I keep going back to. Whether travel or technology or art or even the study of peace and conflict in school, I suppose I’m obsessed with how we’re connected to the world, throughout the world, and with each other. We all leave a mark — sometimes it’s small and sometimes it’s big, sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s bad — and everyone we meet, every place we go, every thing we see and experience and do leaves its mark on us. And the world on your shoulders, inked into your skin… I can’t think of a better way to express that.

Maps are something I’ve been fascinated with for a long time. Maps and navigation and exploration. That is part of why my first tattoo was a compass rose. Because some might assume that navigating through the world today is different, that there is no uncharted territory left to map and explore, but that couldn’t be more untrue.

The uncharted territory that matters most — that most deserves to be explored, that is the reason why you should pack a bag and travel the world, experiencing everything there is to experience — is you.

That is why I travel. And my tattoos are the marks the world has left on me, as I have left marks on the world.

Bangkok, here I come!

nomadandvagabond:

Just found (and purchased!) round trip tickets from NYC to Bangkok (via Shanghai) for $1100 on China Eastern Airlines. It looks like I can pick-up a Bangkok -> Hanoi ticket for $175, so I can still make my way down through Vietnam, over through Cambodia (for New Years Eve, hopefully!), and then back to Thailand for the remainder of my trip.

Now I get to spend the next ten months reading up on the area and coming up with a rough game plan.

I’m just a little excited about this. Just a little.

A friend sent me this photo this weekend. This is from one of our study tour days in Johannesburg.

Anyone with experience traveling through South-East Asia?

nomadandvagabond:

I was going to ground myself, but I’m now getting a really great tax refund, which has got me thinking about a trip through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand — possibly via motorcycle. So, I’m looking for thoughts, suggestions, tips, etc.

I might be crazy, but I’m beginning to seriously contemplate planning this trip. Any advice would be terrific. I’d likely be traveling either during my summer or winter break.

Shark Cage Diving in South Africa

I was busy being sea sick and not getting bit by a shark, so I failed to get photos, but these are screencaps from the DVD that was shot of our trip. We saw four Great White Sharks in total, and I was lucky enough to be in the first group down in the cage because we had the best viewing experience.

In the photos of the divers, I’m on the right in the first one, and the left (looking into the water) in the second one.

I’m back from South Africa, and the semester has started so I have papers to write, classes to attend, and piles of reading to do already.

But here’s a photo from my trip that I’m particularly fond of.

Home. Exhausted. I’ll leave you with this for now…

Gone finishing…

Not really, but I am leaving for the airport for my flight to Guatemala in a couple of hours. I may or may not post while I’m there. I’ll be gone till after Thanksgiving.

While there are plenty of problematic things with Thanksgiving, the history, and the way we celebrate it today, I am supportive of recognizing the goods things in our lives (though we should try to do that every day, not just once a year) and spending time with people you care about (also something that should be done on a regular basis). So to that end, I hope everyone has a nice week.

And while I will be on a plane and a bus, I want to encourage everyone (but especially those in the US) to participate in tomorrow’s Occupy Wall Street Day of Action. Who’s streets? Our streets!
