Long Island Winter Surfing Scene

Neon Night Surfing

While I did not take this photo today, it is of Venice beach, which is where I spent the last several hours surfing. I’m still struggling to stand-up, but I’m also at least catching waves in while lying down or kneeling. And I can’t tell you how much fun it is to catch a wave and find yourself speeding towards the shoreline suddenly. Or to even just be paddling out on the board, enjoying the peacefulness of the ocean.

If the ocean is a drug, I don’t want to be clean and sober.

Yeah, I might be hooked. Just a little.

Surfing and Being Off-The-Grid

Who knew I’d fall in love with surfing right before I move to NYC? There is surfing in NYC, but it’s far colder than Los Angeles, so I’m taking advantage of it in my last week here.

Best of all? It forces me off the grid for a couple hours. It’s great to have the excuse to be unreachable, though it’s sad we feel the need to have an excuse. I’ll take it and run with it, though, because not only do I have my N1, but I just got a work-issued Blackberry and I’m in a “fuck all this technology” sort of mood.

Technology is great and everything, but sometimes you just want to goof off and lose track of time and the world, y’know?

Gnaraloo, Australia

Located on the northwestern coast of Australia, Gnaraloo is famous for its massive waves known as “tombstones.” This location is generally limited to experienced surfers due to the waves’ size and power as well as isolation from major medical facilities. But don’t fret, visitors can windsurf, fish and snorkel and check out the southern tip of the Ningaloo reef.

I don’t know how to surf, but I’ve always wanted to learn.

Whenever I want to chill out and can’t make it to the beach, I sometimes end up watching a surfing documentary.
