GPOY South Africa edition

A friend sent me this photo this weekend. This is from one of our study tour days in Johannesburg.

Shark Cage Diving in South Africa

I was busy being sea sick and not getting bit by a shark, so I failed to get photos, but these are screencaps from the DVD that was shot of our trip. We saw four Great White Sharks in total, and I was lucky enough to be in the first group down in the cage because we had the best viewing experience.

In the photos of the divers, I’m on the right in the first one, and the left (looking into the water) in the second one.

I’m back from South Africa, and the semester has started so I have papers to write, classes to attend, and piles of reading to do already.

But here’s a photo from my trip that I’m particularly fond of.

Get a Copy of My First Travel Photography Book

I’ve started a Kickstarter project to try to offset the cost of my trip to South Africa (unemployed student paying my own way through school… yeah, I need some help). But here’s the awesome thing. I’m also using this as an opportunity to self-publish a book of my travel photography! Specifically photos from my trips to Morocco and Guatemala this year, along with my planned time in South Africa in January.

For only $10 you’ll get a thank you in the book and on this blog. Other cool things I’m offering are postcards from South Africa, a print of one of my travel photos, or even a copy of the photography book itself (or all of the above if you want to be super awesome).

If this ends up being a success, I’m hoping for more photography books to happen down the line. You can back this project by visiting my Kickstarter page here.

Help me make my winter break really awesome by backing my Kickstarter photography book project. :)

My classes for next semester…

I was finally able to register for my classes in Jo’burg (which count as spring semester classes), so I have my final class list now.

In Jo’burg as part of the Democracy & Diversity Institute, I’m taking Economic Development & Democracy and Romancing Violence: Theories and Practices of Political Violence.

When I get back from Jo’burg, I’ll have the spring to write my final papers for the above classes, but I will also still be taking Politics of Violence: Africa’s World War and Global Outlaws: International Criminal Law. I’ll be auditing a French class as well.

Next semester is going to be exciting!

I’ve been accepted to the Democracy & Diversity Institute in Johannesburg in January!

I got the email this morning. Now all I have to do is hope I get some assistance in paying for the program fee, and change my ticket so I arrive on the 5th instead of the 11th. The program lasts till January 21st, which means I get 5 days after that to explore. I doubt I’ll make it to Cape Town (or get to swim with sharks, which I really, really want to do) because of time and money, but I could probably visit Mozambique or Swaziland.

Anyway, I’m ridiculously excited about this. If you have any recommendations for my time in Jo’burg (or the surrounding area for my 5 days after the program), drop me a line.

South Africa is one of the most criminally violent countries. With around 50 murders, 100 rapes, nearly 400 armed burglaries and over 500 violent assaults recorded every day, it is not surprising that as many as eight out of ten South Africans feel unsafe walking in their own districts after dark.
And it used to be worse: since the end of apartheid in 1994, the murder rate has fallen by half. Yet such improvements are marred by the appalling number of police officers being accused of serious crimes. (via theeconomist)
