A new year is born

(Reblogged from aljazeera)

This year has been hard, but incredibly positive overall. I’ve done some amazing things in 2011 that I never imagined I would do. The big highlights include finishing my first full year at The New School and living in NYC, visiting some amazing places (including spending the summer in Guatemala), and quitting my job that I’ve had for more than 6 years. It hasn’t been easy but I also don’t regret anything.

And what more can you ask for?

I don’t have a clue as to what 2012 has in store for me, though I’m kicking it off with the Democracy & Diversity Institute in South Africa, which is not a bad way to start the year.

There are a lot of terrible things that happen in the world every day, but it’s important to see and remember all the good things too. As always, my amazing friends (old and new) have helped make this year amazing, and helped remind me that even when things suck, they don’t suck that much. And that yeah, we can actually change the world.

Here’s to 2012.

“If I Ever Leave This World Alive” - Flogging Molly

I haven’t really been feeling up to any of the new year’s parties I’ve been invited to, and was leaning towards just hanging out at home or going to the beach or something. But then someone mentioned that Flogging Molly was playing just down the street from me tonight at the Wiltern, and I finally made up my mind to go see them. Good way to ring in 2010, and a fitting way to close out the decade, I think.

This song in particular is a favorite of mine.

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.

“The New Year” - Death Cab For Cutie

So this is the new year
And I don’t feel any different
The clanking of crystal
Explosions off in the distance (in the distance)

So this is the new year
And I have no resolutions
For self assigned penance
For problems with easy solutions
