“Twenty-four miles of Plaquemines Parish is destroyed. Everything in it is dead.”
Also: CORPORATE INTERESTS AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVE RESISTED CALLS TO SUMMON THE US DREDGING FLEET AND BUILD A MASSIVE SAND BERM TO KEEP THE OIL OFF THE COAST. Among the reasons why: BP has continually claimed that no major environmental damage was likely, that the heavy crude would stay off-shore.
Here’s a universal truth to take with us for the next 50-100 years: If a fossil fuel company is discussing the environmental impact of their activities, they’re fucking lying. If a fossil fuel company is discussing the human impact of their activities, they’re fucking lying. If a fossil fuel company is discussing the economic impact of their activities, they’re probably telling the truth.
SO the shorthand is that unless they’re discussing their daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly profits, the likelihood of any information from a fossil fuel company being truthful approaches zero.
Secondly, with all the “retard libertarian” (see: Rand Paul) stupidity coming out of idiotic people’s mouths recently, I would love to hear from a teabagger how “the market” is going to fix this one. “The market corrects all.” “The market is infallible.” “If we just left the market alone…” Shut the fuck up, environmental destruction is more profitable than environmental care and we all know it - so “the market” encourages it.
So yeah, if the only thing that matters to you is the ability to make another buck at the expense of the rest of the human race, the market is pretty close to infallible. If you believe in things like “ethics” or have brain functions that are more highly evolved than a housecat, you understand the difference between ideological horseshit and reality.
I completely agree with this.
Also, fuck BP, because I cannot say that enough.
